A young bride-to-be, who's father had fallen in Vietnam, is searching for a friend or close comrade who served with him to walk her down the aisle. Larkann Steward, who was only 6 month old at the time of her father's death, wants to preserve her father's memory by letting a fellow Marine give her away on August 30 in Sacramento, CA. As she states in an article from Howard-Scripps News Service, "it is her livelong dream." Her dad, LanceCpl. David G. Steward, a "roughrider" in Marine slang, was ambushed driving down Route9 on Jan 13,1968, a few miles off Ca Lu, in the onset of the Tet-Offensive. He never made it back to base, as military records indicate. His service record also states that he completed boot-camp in Camp Pendelton on Nov. 5, 1967 as a member of Recruiting Platoon 168. He came to Vietnam only 2 days later, where he was assigned to 9th Motor Transport Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. What makes Larkann's search so complicated is the fact that her dad was only in the country a short time and did not had much time for close friendships. However, she hopes that someone out there remembers him. But time is running out. She even received help from Tennessee Veteran Affairs Commissioner Fred Tucker; so far not luck. That's why he, also a former Marine, promised her to walk her down the aisle, if she is unable to find a comrade of her father. If you served with LCpl. Steward or know anyone who did, please contact: Veteran Affairs Commissioner Fred Tucker 215 8th Ave. N Nashville, TN 37203 or call (615) 741-2930. You'll never have a better chance to honor a fallen comrade by making this young lady's dream come through.
