September is About Suicide Prevention & Awareness

A recent article came across my desk written by Samantha Rich in the Binghamton Homepage about an upcoming memorial to remember the nation’s veterans who have taken their own lives. In New York a field of small flags, similar to those seen during other nationally recognized veteran oriented memorials, will be on display during the entire month of September at the Tioga County Office Building. The display is called the “Field of the Forgotten Fallen”.

At VETS.COM we are all for doing whatever we can to help veterans with suicidal thoughts know that they are not alone in this fight. We strongly support organizations like StackUp.org, National Alliance to End Veteran Suicide, Stop Soldier Suicide, et al.

I struggle with my own dark thoughts in this area with feelings of emptiness, futility, and loneliness. The thought that keeps me alive in these moments isn’t a joyful one, rather it’s actually a bit morbid but it helps me, and that is the thought that “I’m going to die one day, I can wait until then”. It doesn’t make me happy or something like that but it helps me get through to a happy day that might come a week or month later. I know the sun is behind the clouds… somewhere.
