It’s rough being a one man team as I try to find funding, create meaningful content, and create a team for this website. In my personal life I’m an artist and poet, which is another reason why I have to do Grubhub to make ends meet lol, but here’s an old poem I wrote that is loosely based on my time in Iraq.
I had the opportunity to read it at an event called “Returning Soldiers Speak” about 10 years ago now. So here’s a brief intermission from the usual news and updates. This is loosely based on my time in Iraq, my experience of the military, and the war in general especially OIF/OEF.
Dream Sweet Sleep
I saw an Eagle
You said it was freedom
And I am a raven
Dream, sweet sleep
Scratching your name
into my heart
The patch of barren soil
God is the better part of my speech
altogether and everything.
Weep for illusions
Happy at last and finally free
The Eagle eats the raven
Night is a shower of darkness
Meteorites flash
MOAB bright
Iraq, Afghanistan
Korea, Japan
Vietnam
Every hero
a dead man’s anthem
Oh say can you see?
Bullets whiz with ringing sounds
Richochets
Bomb blasts
Cut that soldier’s orders to go home
Better to lay in the soil of American dreams
God, You sent for me?
Like an angel protected me
And this corpse laying beside me
A memory
As often as I sleep I try to forget
The coward
The fool
The words of a brother
There were mortar shells, crushed stryker hulls
and daisy chains all in a row, after row, after row
Dress Right, Dress!
Ready, Front!
At Ease
Take it easy

When did you become a sergeant?
The true nature of power spoils every friendship
God bless the army
Allah, Amen

The gears of war are turning again.
