How to Request a VA Card or CAC ID Replacement

K from the Army National Guard writes:

Hello, I was told to come to this site to apply for my military ID CARD.

Hey K,

We do not provide military ID’s at this website. This is a veteran run operation in the private sector so we do not have any official connection or contract with the Department of Defense or the Veteran Affairs Department.

But we are here to help you figure out how to get yours. I’m assuming you meant a VA ID Card, but since you called it a military ID Card you might mean a Common Access Card also known as a “CAC/Smart” card. So, let’s take a look at both.

First, let’s look at the VA Card.
If you’re here at VETS.COM looking to get a VA Card (Veterans Identification Card/VIC) then that probably just means there was a small breakdown in communication. As you know the Department of Veterans Affairs is a government organization and they actually use .gov at the end of all their website names. In this case they utilize the address vets.gov to redirect to their va.gov website.

If that’s the case you can apply for a VA ID Card here: How To Get A Veteran Identification Card.

Next, we’ll look at the CAC card which is commonly known as a military ID, just in case.
From what I can tell by reading the Military One Source page, the Common Access Card must be issued in person, which makes a lot of sense since it’s your ID card that gets you on Post and accesses all of your Personally Identifiable information.

Now after they tell you that you have to do it in person they make you jump through several more hoops to find out where to go, so I’m going to cut out those extra stops and paragraphs and just list it out.

  1. Make sure you’re enrolled in DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System).
    1. I’m assuming that you are already enrolled in DEERS if you’re still attending training once a month. On to the next step.
  2. Once you’ve verified you’re enrolled in DEERS, it’s time to visit a RAPIDS (Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification System) site. You can find a RAPIDS office and setup up an appointment through their website.
    1. I’m willing to bet five bucks that they will be able to check your DEERS enrollment status while you’re at it, if you ask.

So that’s the quickest way I can find to get your ID issue resolved if you’re looking for a CAC card.

Thanks for writing in,
