I was just granted disability through my husband’s military service but my name is incorrect! How can I correct this ?
Hey,
I looked through the VA’s website and it looks like there’s no simple option, probably due to federal logistics, identity theft, etc.
There is a process to change to your “new” legal name which I believe will work for you since you are not required to show identification with the name they misspelt.
You just have to show government issued identification with the correct name shown since everything they do is assigned to your SSN
The link to begin that process is here: https://www.va.gov/resources/how-to-change-your-legal-name-on-file-with-va/
You will need to send in a copy of your Social Security card (or other identifying documents they accept from their list) with your “new” legal name to ALL of the addresses, from which you receive payments and which also have the incorrect name. These addresses are available in their drop down menus for disability, education, home loans, etc. at the bottom of the page.
The website says you will also have to update DEERS but in your case only if they also have the misspelt name on file.
I would also add a letter describing why you’re requesting the name change so everything is on record.
Finally, there is a note on their webpage that says: “Note: You can also call your regional office to get help changing your name on file with VA.”
If you give them a call they will probably tell you to come in with legal documents but perhaps they can do the name changes for you on site if you live close to a VA office.
They might also be able to help you find out which departments you need to send your documents so they can update your name.
Hope this helps,
