A few years ago, I adopted a grave of an American soldier “Bacon, William Edward” who is buried in the American cemetery of Henri-Chapelle in Belgium …Being passionate about history, together with friends of the Boys Scouts of America…we were able to establish a biography and history of the soldier. Also, we found photos of his unit and his registration card before going to war…[We were] also able to find the soldier’s niece who called him Uncle “Bill”. [He] was at the 23rd Engineering Battailon in the 3rd US Army Incorporated and the soldier fell on September 17, 1944.

I am looking for a photo of the soldier, from which I only received a picture of him before the war, to find [any photos] or documents from the battle from 17 September 1944 or group pictures from the unit…to pay tribute and to be able to give a story to this soldier and to be able to pass it on to his family. To thank you for your help which is truly precious.

Sincerely.

Dear M:

Thank you for writing in! You are the first person to write in to VETS.COM we are honored to be given this task and happy to help in any way we can.

My greatest resources are the people who visit this site. So, if anyone reading this has any information they can email me. Hopefully someone who knew Lt. Bacon or was a part of his BN or Co can contact me and I can put you two in touch.

Also, something that people don’t consider sometimes is checking a Facebook group.

Now you seem pretty resourceful, but just in case here is a link to the 23rd ENGINEER BATTALION 3rd ARMORED DIVISION’s FB group.

Best of luck to you and if I receive any news I will post it here.
